Most of Vero Beach’s visitor life happens on the barrier island. Ocean Drive, near Humiston Park, is a short stretch of boutiques, cafes and small hotels facing the ocean, and the public beach beside it has lifeguards, a boardwalk and dunes covered in sea grape. South Beach Park and Jaycee Park offer quieter sand, and at the far south end of the county Round Island Park sits on both the ocean and the lagoon. Waldo Sexton, a pioneer developer who salvaged old timber, tiles and doors from all over Florida, left his mark on several of the island’s oldest buildings, including the rambling Driftwood Resort.
Riverside Park, at the island end of the Merrill Barber Bridge, is the county’s cultural hub. The Vero Beach Museum of Art is the Treasure Coast’s major art museum, with changing exhibitions and a sculpture park, and Riverside Theatre next door runs a professional season of musicals and plays along with outdoor concerts. The park’s oak lawns host the long-running Under the Oaks art show each March.
On the mainland, McKee Botanical Garden is the place to spend a morning. Created in the 1930s by Arthur McKee and Waldo Sexton as a tourist attraction, it fell into ruin and was restored as a nonprofit garden, with waterlily pools, orchids, palms and Sexton’s Spanish-style Hall of Giants. Downtown, the Heritage Center and Indian River Citrus Museum tell the story of the groves that made the county’s name, and a monthly gallery stroll fills the arts district along 14th Avenue.
Baseball fans should stop at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex, the former Dodgertown. The Dodgers trained here for 60 springs, and Holman Stadium and the grounds are now run by Major League Baseball as a year-round amateur baseball center, with a marker on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail. Public access depends on what is scheduled, so check before you go.
